WHAT IS DEFRA AND WHAT IS A DEFRA STOVE......?
DEFRA is an abbreviation for Department For Rural Affairs. It is a government ministry.
DEFRA have been charged with overseeing the wood burning stove industry, and ensuring that the Clean Air legislation (or "smokeless zones" as they are more commonly known) is enforced.
They do this by running an approvals scheme for wood and multifuel burning stoves (and fuels) that are considered suitable for use inside a "smokeless zone". If you live in any major UK town or city, you live in such a zone!
DEFRA approved stoves tend to be quite a bit more expensive than other stoves and we sell some models that are DEFRA approved for those people that want to buy one.
However, please note that if you plan to burn smokeless fuels, you will comply with the clean air regulations without needing to buy a DEFRA stove. The whole DEFRA stove issue is a complex one, so if you need any advice about choosing a stove please give us a call or visit us.
